White-tailed deer breeding behavior — the rut — is triggered by photoperiod, not temperature. As day length shortens below approximately 10 hours in late October through mid-November, declining light stimulates the pineal gland to increase melatonin production, which in turn drives hormonal changes in both bucks and does (Verme, 1965). This photoperiodic mechanism ensures that fawns are born in late spring when forage conditions are optimal, regardless of year-to-year weather variation. Hunters who wait for a “cold snap” to trigger the rut are observing a correlation, not a cause — the rut timing is remarkably consistent from year to year within a given latitude.
Buck behavior during the pre-rut (September–October) centers on establishing dominance hierarchies and marking territory. Rub lines appear along travel corridors as bucks strip velvet and deposit forehead gland scent on saplings. Scrapes — pawed-out depressions in leaf litter beneath overhanging licking branches — serve as chemical signposts where bucks deposit tarsal, interdigital, and preorbital gland secretions. Scrape activity peaks two to three weeks before peak breeding and can be used to pattern buck movement before the chaos of the rut begins.
The antler cycle is driven by testosterone levels tied to the same photoperiod cues that govern breeding. Antlers begin growing in spring under velvet (a highly vascularized skin), harden and shed velvet in late August–September as testosterone rises, and are cast in late winter as testosterone declines. Antler size is a function of age, genetics, and nutrition — with nutrition being the most manageable factor for wildlife managers. Quality habitat with diverse browse, agricultural crops, and mineral availability produces larger-antlered bucks at younger ages.
Barometric pressure changes also influence deer movement patterns. Research and hunter observation consistently show that deer activity increases in the 12–24 hours before a significant pressure drop (approaching storm fronts). Bucks that have been nocturnal may move during daylight hours ahead of a front. Savvy hunters monitor weather forecasts and prioritize sitting during falling-pressure windows, especially when these coincide with the pre-rut or peak rut phases in late October and early November.
Pre-Rut (Sept–Oct)
Bucks are on predictable feeding-to-bedding patterns. Scrape and rub activity increases through October. Bachelor groups break up. Trail cameras on food sources (ag fields, food plots, oak ridges) reveal consistent movement. Early archery hunters should focus on evening food-source stands.
Peak Rut (late Oct–mid Nov)
Bucks abandon feeding patterns and travel widely seeking estrous does. Daytime movement peaks. Bucks check doe bedding areas, cruise downwind of feeding fields, and respond to rattling and calling. All-day sits near doe groups and funnels between bedding areas are most productive.
Post-Rut (December)
Bucks are physically depleted from breeding and return to food sources to recover body condition before winter. Movement becomes predictable again but concentrated in shorter daylight windows. Late-season food plots, standing corn, and winter wheat fields are key. Muzzleloader and late archery seasons capitalize on this pattern.
Winter (Jan–Feb)
Deer yard up in conifer cover (northern MN, MI UP) or seek thermal shelter in river bottoms and shelterbelts. Movement is minimal and focused on energy conservation. Bucks shed antlers from late December through February. Shed hunting season begins.
