Minnesota Walleye Opener 2026
Dates, regulations, top lakes, and stocking data for MN and WI — updated for the May 9 opener.
By the NomadPath Team · Updated April 15, 2026 · Data sourced from MN DNR and WI DNR
REGULATION ALERT — 2026 May Be the Final 6-Walleye Year
The MN DNR proposed reducing the statewide walleye limit from 6 to 4 fish, effective March 2027. If the rule change is approved as proposed, the 2026 season is the last time Minnesota anglers can keep a 6-walleye daily limit. A final decision on the proposed 2027 rule change is expected before the 2026 opener — the 2026 season operates under the current 6-walleye statewide limit regardless.
📢 The MN DNR is expected to announce a final decision on the walleye limit reduction before opener.

Walleye begin feeding aggressively as ice retreats and water temperatures climb toward the 45–55°F prime feeding window — see our walleye species guide for more on seasonal behavior patterns. In years with late ice-out, fish concentrate in shallow, warming water near shore — often ideal opener conditions if ice cleared recently. In early-thaw years, fish may already be post-spawn and moving deeper by opener.
Ice-out timing varies by 4–6 weeks across MN depending on the winter. Northern lakes like Leech and Winnibigoshish clear 2–3 weeks later than central MN lakes on average. If you're flexible on state, Wisconsin's walleye opener is a full week earlier — check the fishing opener guide for a side-by-side comparison. You can also search for recent stocking activity on specific lakes via MN stocking reports.

78th Annual Governor's Fishing Opener
The Governor’s Fishing Opener is a two-day ceremonial kickoff to Minnesota’s fishing season — a tradition dating back to 1948. The 2026 event is hosted in Stillwater on the St. Croix River, which has never hosted the opener before. The St. Croix offers walleye, musky, lake sturgeon, flathead and channel catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass. It’s a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River and a popular recreation corridor between the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.
Planning note for anglers: The St. Croix near Stillwater will see significantly elevated boat traffic on opener weekend due to the event. If you’re planning a southern Minnesota opener, build in extra ramp time or consider fishing Friday afternoon before the crowds arrive Saturday morning. Northern lakes like Mille Lacs, Leech, and Upper Red will be comparatively quieter despite their own opener crowds.
The Minnesota walleye opener is Saturday, May 9, 2026. This date also coincides with the 2026 Governor's Fishing Opener in Stillwater on the St. Croix River. The season runs through late February 2027 on most waters.
The statewide daily limit is 6 walleye, with only one fish over 20 inches. Mille Lacs Lake has special regulations: 3 walleye daily, must be 17 inches or greater, with only one over 20 inches. Note: the MN DNR has proposed reducing the statewide limit to 4 fish starting in 2027 — the 2026 season operates under the current 6-fish limit.
There is no statewide minimum size for walleye in Minnesota, but individual lakes have their own special regulations. Mille Lacs requires all walleye be 17 inches or greater in 2026. Always check the specific regulations for your water body on the MN DNR website or in the current fishing regulations booklet.
Wisconsin's inland walleye season opens the first Saturday in May — May 2, 2026 — on most inland waters. The daily limit is 5 walleye statewide (no more than 3 from a single lake), with a 15-inch minimum on most waters. Note: Great Lakes waters (Lake Michigan, Green Bay) have separate season rules — check the Wisconsin DNR for Lake Michigan walleye regulations.
No. Both Minnesota and Wisconsin walleye seasons are fully closed from early March until the opener. There is no catch-and-release walleye period on most waters during the closed season.
Top Minnesota lakes include Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, Upper Red Lake, Lake Winnibigoshish, Lake of the Woods, and Lake Vermilion. Each has strong walleye populations supported by DNR stocking and natural reproduction. NomadPath tracks real-time stocking events and regulation updates for all of these lakes.
The 2026 season operates under the current 6-walleye statewide limit. The MN DNR has proposed reducing this to 4 fish effective March 2027. The final decision on the proposed 2027 rule change is expected before the 2026 opener. Monitor nomadpath.net for updates.
Yes. A valid Minnesota fishing license is required. Licenses are available online at mnhunt.com, by phone at 1-888-665-4236, or at any DNR license agent (bait shops, sporting goods stores, most Walmart locations). A resident one-day license is $12; non-resident one-day is $14.
The Minnesota walleye season opens May 9, 2026 and runs through late February 2027 on most waters. The statewide daily limit is 6 walleye, with only one fish over 20 inches. Mille Lacs Lake has special regulations: 3 walleye daily, 17-inch minimum, only one over 20 inches, season through November 30.
The MN opener is Saturday, May 9, 2026 — the statewide opener for walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. This also coincides with the 78th Governor's Fishing Opener in Stillwater on the St. Croix River.
Top Wisconsin walleye lakes at opener include Lake Winnebago (131,600 acres, major spring walleye run via Fox River), Chippewa Flowage (trophy walleye and muskie, northern WI), and the Green Bay/Fox River system (world-class spring walleye run). Wisconsin's inland walleye season opens May 2, 2026 with a 5-fish statewide limit (max 3 per lake) and 15-inch minimum.
Fish the first two hours after sunrise and the last hour before sunset on opener day. Walleye are low-light feeders — their reflective tapetum lucidum (eye layer) gives them a visual advantage in dim conditions that they exploit aggressively. Overcast opener days are a gift: the fish feed throughout the day rather than retreating to structure during bright midday hours. If opener weekend is sunny and calm, shift your heaviest effort to the first 90 minutes of light and plan an afternoon nap.
A 1/8 to 3/8 oz jig tipped with a fathead minnow in 8–15 feet of water is the Upper Midwest opener standard for good reason — it works. As water temperatures climb past 50°F, leech-tipped Lindy rigs and crawler harnesses become increasingly effective. If the fish are neutral and ignoring a jig, slow down to a Lindy rig and let the bait sit in the strike zone longer. Snap jigging into deeper structure works when fish are actively chasing; bottom bouncing is better when they’re sluggish.
Target wind-blown shoreline points, emerging weed edges, and river or creek mouths early in the opener. Walleye stage in 8–20 feet of water near structure during the pre-spawn and post-spawn transition — they’re not in the deep basin on opener weekend. South-facing points warm faster and attract walleye first as temperatures rise. If you’re fishing a new lake, identify 8–15 foot depth breaks on a contour map and work those transition zones with the boat positioned to cast onto structure and retrieve through the drop.
45–55°F is the prime walleye feeding window on opener weekend. Walleye are exothermic — their activity level and feeding aggression is directly tied to water temperature. A degree or two of difference can mean the difference between a wide-open bite and a tough morning. Check surface temps for your target lake on NomadPath before you leave home, and adjust your approach if temps are outside the prime window. Cold water (below 45°F) calls for smaller baits and slower presentations.
If you’re fishing unfamiliar water for the opener, focus on three things before you launch: contour breaks in 8–15 feet, river mouths or tributary inflows that warm first, and any DNR public fishing piers or access point causeways (walleye often stack near structure near ramps early season). NomadPath’s lake pages include depth contour overlays and access point data for most major MN and WI walleye lakes. Spend 10 minutes with the map the evening before and mark 3–5 starting spots. Don’t burn fuel looking for fish — work your starting spots thoroughly before moving.
Popular opener lakes see heavy traffic. Mille Lacs, Leech, and Winnibigoshish launch ramps fill by 4:30–5:00 AM on opener morning — arrive earlier or accept a long ramp queue. Scout your ramp Friday evening and note the parking situation. If crowds are a concern, lesser-known lakes with recent stocking activity often fish just as well with zero competition. NomadPath’s stocking reports show which lakes have received recent walleye plants — these are the sleeper picks that don’t show up on any “best lakes” list.
