TWO RULES GONE IN 2026 — Minnesota Deer
The southern shotgun-only zone is repealed statewide as of January 1, 2026 — rifles are legal unless your county opts out. And crossbows are now permanent for all archery hunters: the Legislature removed the sunset unanimously this spring. 2026 is the first season under both changes.
The shotgun zone is repealed as of January 1, 2026. Rifles are now legal in the former shotgun counties — with one catch. Counties in the old zone can hold public hearings and pass their own firearm restrictions. Before you bring a rifle south this fall, check whether your county has acted — we cover how in our county-status explainer.
Crossbows are here to stay. The Legislature voted unanimously this spring — 67–0 in the Senate, 133–0 in the House — to remove the expiration date on crossbow use. Any hunter with an archery license can use a crossbow for the whole archery season. No special permit, no age requirement, and no more wondering whether next year’s rules will change.

If you want an antlerless deer in a lottery DPA, buy your firearms or muzzleloader license and declare your lottery area by Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026 (the first Thursday after Labor Day — DNR publishes final 2026 details by Aug. 1). You’re entered automatically when you buy and declare. Miss it and you’re bucks-only in lottery areas this fall.
🔔NomadPath sends a reminder before the September 10 antlerless deadline.
Set Reminder →Minnesota manages deer by permit area, and your DPA decides your bag limit: bucks-only, lottery, either-sex, or a 2-, 3-, or 5-deer limit. The statewide cap is 5 deer, but your DPA’s designation is the binding number. License sales open in August.
If you hunt in a designated CWD management or surveillance zone, plan on mandatory sampling for any deer a year or older taken during the opening firearms weekend, and check the carcass-movement rules before you drive home. As of May 2026, 22 Minnesota deer permit areas have confirmed CWD detections in the last three years.
