Wisconsin also offers managed hunting grounds with stocked pheasant birds available throughout the season.
Most states enforce a delayed shooting start on opener (10 AM in SD, 9 AM in MN). By midday, birds that were pushed by early-morning hunters settle into secondary cover — food plots, shelterbelts, and thick grass strips between harvested fields.
On public land in SD and MN, the biggest WPAs and WIAs get hammered on opener weekend. Target smaller parcels (40–160 acres) that other hunters drive past. These hold birds all season, especially if they border standing corn or sunflowers.
A well-trained flushing dog (Lab, Springer) or pointer (GSP, English Setter) dramatically increases your success rate and retrieval on crippled birds. If you don’t have a dog, hunt with a group and use blockers at the end of cover strips.
Lodging in pheasant country (Pierre, Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell) sells out months before the traditional opener. If you’re planning a nonresident trip, book accommodations as early as possible — especially for opening weekend.
South Dakota GFP publishes its annual Upland Outlook in late August — the best official read on fall bird numbers. High bird counts in the central SD counties (Spink, Faulk, Hand) signal a strong opener. NomadPath will break down the results when it drops.
The 2026 South Dakota traditional pheasant opener is Saturday, October 17, 2026 — the third Saturday of October, per SD GFP. Youth season runs September 26–October 4, and the resident-only season is October 10–12. The season closes January 31, 2027.
South Dakota’s resident-only pheasant season is October 10–12, 2026 — a three-day Saturday-to-Monday window on public lands the weekend before the traditional opener, per Travel South Dakota. SD GFP’s official season listing is pending; verify before you plan.
Minnesota’s 2026 pheasant season opens Saturday, October 10, 2026, and runs through January 3, 2027. Youth season is October 3–5. The daily bag limit is 2 roosters (rising to 3 from December 1) with a possession limit of 6.
A South Dakota Nonresident Small Game license is $142, covering two 5-day hunting periods, per the SD GFP license fee schedule. A habitat stamp is also required: $25 for nonresidents, $10 for residents.
Pheasant shooting hours in South Dakota begin at 10 a.m. Central Time and run to sunset.
No. South Dakota pheasant licenses are available over the counter — there is no draw or lottery required. Nonresident licenses are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and typically do not sell out.
The daily bag limit in South Dakota is 3 roosters (males only) with a possession limit of 15. Shooting hours begin at 10 AM Central Time during the traditional season.
Brown, Beadle, Spink, Faulk, and Edmunds counties rank among South Dakota’s top pheasant producers based on SD GFP’s annual harvest report — all in the central and east-river corridor. South Dakota discontinued its quantitative roadside brood survey in 2019, so current planning relies on the qualitative Upland Outlook published by SD GFP each late August and the post-season county harvest data.
