Ursus americanus — the Upper Midwest's largest predator and a legitimate big game animal that demands significant preparation and biological understanding. Bear hunting in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan is primarily a permit-lottery system with meaningful waiting periods, making preparation before your license year critical.
Hyperphagia — the extreme pre-den feeding period — is the most important concept in bear hunting biology. Bears must accumulate 30–40% of body weight in fat reserves to survive 4–7 months of denning.
Bear anatomy creates unique challenges. The shoulder is further forward than expected, vitals sit very low in the body cavity, and a quartering-toward shot is high-risk. The ideal shot is tight behind the shoulder, low on the body, on a perfectly broadside animal with feet flat on the ground. Wait for this presentation — even if it takes multiple sessions.
Apply every year. Preference points accumulate and don't expire in MN and WI. Secondary zones sometimes draw at 100% without preference points.
