Lepomis macrochirus — the gateway species for millions of anglers and the most abundant sunfish in Upper Midwest waters. Trophy bluegill over 9 inches are genuinely difficult to find and represent sophisticated population dynamics that reward knowledgeable anglers.
Most anglers have experienced lakes full of 5–7 inch bluegill that never seem to grow. This is population stunting — females deposit 2,000–60,000 eggs per spawn (2–5 spawns per season). Without sufficient predators (bass, pike) to thin numbers, overcrowding suppresses growth for the entire cohort.
Large bluegill consistently come from waters with these characteristics:
