Migration Biology

Three variables drive migration timing:

• Photoperiod: Internal calendar sets approximate windows regardless of weather.
• Temperature: Sustained cold (3–5 days below freezing) triggers reliable movement. A hard freeze north of your area is more reliable than a local cold night.
• Wind: North/NW winds at 15–30 mph produce the best migration flights. South winds stall movement.

Most productive hunting follows a NW wind event with overnight temps falling into the 20s–30s for several consecutive days starting in mid-to-late October.

Key Species

• Mallards: Most harvested duck in North America. Dabbling duck — shallow water marshes and flooded ag fields. 36–60+ decoy spreads with landing zone upwind. Motion decoys effective early, counterproductive late season.
• Teal: Blue-winged are early migrants (gone by early October — hence early September teal seasons). Green-winged migrate later through November.
• Diving ducks (scaup, canvasback, ringneck, goldeneye): Deep open water, not shallow marsh. 50–200+ decoy spreads. Species ID required by federal law — canvasback's sloped "Roman nose" profile distinguishes them from redhead.
• Canada geese: Migrant vs. resident birds. October field hunting in harvested corn country is exceptional in ND/SD.
• Snow geese: Light Goose Conservation Order (spring) — no bag limit, electronic calls allowed, unplugged shotguns permitted. ND/SD are prime states.
• Specklebellies: Among the most prized waterfowl. Wary, respond poorly to poor calling. Pass through ND/SD in significant fall numbers.

Equipment Notes

• Steel shot: Less dense than lead (~7.9 vs 11.3 g/cc). Use 2 sizes larger than lead equivalent (lead #4 → steel #2 or BB). Patterns tighter — use standard to improved cylinder chokes.
• Calling: High-ball for distance → feeding chuckle when birds are working → silence when committed. Aggressive calling on final approach is the most common mistake that flares incoming birds.

State-by-State Highlights

• North Dakota: Top waterfowl state in the Lower 48 for diversity and volume. Prairie pothole region = densest breeding duck populations in North America. Missouri Coteau and Devils Lake basin are legendary.
• South Dakota: Eastern glacial lakes and Missouri River reservoirs. October Canada goose concentrations in harvested corn are exceptional.
• Minnesota: MN River valley, Red Lake region, central lakes corridor. Diverse hunting from September teal through November late-season mallards.
• Wisconsin: Mississippi River backwaters (Pools 4–9) are iconic — flooded timber and backwater marshes holding divers, mallards, wood ducks, and teal simultaneously.
• Michigan: Great Lakes shoreline, Saginaw Bay (major staging for diving ducks Oct–Nov), UP lakes and river systems.
